Will BABYLON Be REBUILT in the Last Days?

Will the literal city of Babylon, in modern Iraq, be Rebuilt? Is Babylon, Iraq, that "great city" of "Babylon" mentioned 5 times in Revelation 18? Will original Babylon rise up again to exist as the leading city of the Antichrist at the End Time?

Unfulfilled prophecies about Babylon in the Old Testament must yet be fulfilled. To be fulfilled, Babylon must rise up again, just as Israel rose up again to fulfill the prophecies of the Jewish return to that land in the Last Days.

The following five (5) prophecies about Babylon are UN-fulfilled prophecies. Babylon must be Rebuilt so these five (5) prophecies can be literally fulfilled. All five (5) prophecies concern the FINAL FALL of Babylon...

1. The FINAL FALL will be Suddenly & Violently
2. After the FINAL FALL there will never again be any inhabitants
3. After the FINAL FALL there will never again be Arab dwellers
4. After the FINAL FALL the bricks will never again be used
5. The FINAL FALL will occur in the Day of the Lord

NOT ONE of these prophecies has ever been fulfilled. Therefore, Babylon must be REBUILT...and will be.

First, the dilemma found in a prophecy about the FINAL FALL of Babylon. Read the two prophecies about Babylon below, Jeremiah on the left, Revelation on the right.
Jeremiah's associate, and an Angel, are both commanded to throw a stone into the Euphrates river. This action is said to symbolize the same result--that Babylon will be destroyed, never to rise again. The two prophecies were given over 600 years apart. The "dilemma"?

1. If Jeremiah's Babylon (ancient city of Nebuchanezzer) is destroyed never to rise again, how is it that 600 years after Babylon fell to the Persians it receives the same prophecy in Revelation18?

2. Some would say, "Well, the 'system' of Babylon simply moved on to another city, so 600 years later the same prophecy could be repeated in Revelation 18." But still, Babylon would have to "rise again" somewhere for Revelation to repeat that prophecy.

3. Can you legitimately declare Babylon has fallen, never to rise again, if it reemerges in another city? Does Jeremiah's prophecy really mean that the bricks and mortar of ancient Babylon fell, while Revelation's prophecy means that Babylon lives on in another bricks and mortar city, and it, too, is scheduled for a future fall? Why wouldn't Babylon "the system" just move to another city, and make the prophecy totally meaningless?

4. Let's not make a mockery of prophecy and stretch its plain meaning to the irrational. The graphic below shows the confusion of this idea--that Babylon falls twice, each time never to rise again...
4. Now, the next graphic shows the truth of the matter, and confusion and "irrational-prophecy" disappear. The Jeremiah prophecy refers to the same prophecy as Revelation. BOTH prophecies point to the same event...the FINAL FALL of Babylon, at the End Time, never to rise again. Follow the direction of the arrows in both pictures.
Jeremiah and  Revelation 18 are "book-end" prophecies...they correlate. Use your marginal verse references in Revelation 18 to see how many (and there are many) phrases and words refer to Jeremiah 50 & 51 with parallel terms. This fact highlights the truth that both books are talking about the same Babylon in future prophecy.

Jeremiah 50-51 is a double-reference prophecy. Nebuchadnezzar's Babylon and End-Time Babylon prophecies are compressed into what is a single prophetic narrative, without distinction to time intervals. This is a common rhetorical devise of the Prophets.

1. Jeremiah identifies the geo-ethnic identity of Babylon as "Chaldean" (50:1) "Chaldea" word forms are used in Jeremiah 50-51 ten (10) times, all in reference to Babylon. Chaldeans were the people of Biblical Babylon, located in modern-day Iraq, the site of the original ancient city of Babylon. This specific designator, "Chaldea", eliminates any reference to Babylon being any other city or nation outside of Iraq. 1 (bold-underlined numbers like this refer to End Notes)

2. The TIME of Jeremiah's Babylon prophecies is set in the days of the Final Salvation of the Jews. (Jer. 50:4-5; 32:40), an event Paul  says will happen at the End Time (Rom. 11:25-27).

The following is a sample of the rationale I will use with the five (5) UN-fulfilled prophecies which demonstrate that Babylon MUST BE REBUILT.

Two prophecies concerning Babylon of Chaldea (Iraq):

1.“…utterly destroy her” Jer. 50:26

2.“…it will never again be inhabited” Jer. 50:39

3. If these two prophecies have been fulfilled, then the Babylon of Chaldea is finished, and the Babylon of Revelation is another city (Rome, London, New York City, etc.). 2

4. But if they have not been fulfilled. then the city of Revelation is the Babylon of Chaldea.

Why I Expect Babylon to be Rebuilt in the Last Days

FACT #1--
The FINAL FALL will be Suddenly, Violently, Totally 3

"The LORD has opened His armory
And  has brought forth the weapons of His indignation, For it is a work of the Lord GOD of hosts
In the land of the Chaldeans...utterly destroy her,
Let nothing be left to her."
Jeremiah 50:25-26

"...and say, 'Just so shall Babylon sink down and not rise again..."
 Jeremiah 51:64

DID THAT HAPPEN?

Read the historical accounts of the First Fall of Babylon below...

The Persians took ancient Babylon in a relatively peaceful conquest. Babylon was not "utterly destroyed." The Greek historian, Herodotus, recounts it in more detail...
History is of one voice on the "peaceful" conquest of ancient Babylon. Therefore,
FACT #1--The FINAL FALL will be Suddenly, Violently, Totally...
... DID NOT HAPPEN 3
This is still to happen in a rebuilt Babylon because the Persians took Babylon without a fight & without destruction.
Why I Expect Babylon to be Rebuilt in the Last Days

FACT #2--
After the FINAL FALL there will Never Again be any Inhabitants 4

It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation;
Nor will the Arab pitch his tent there... Isaiah 13:20

DID THAT HAPPEN?

Read the historical accounts below of the Inhabitants of Babylon

The Graphic below shows a basic timeline of people living at Babylon since its fall in 539 BC until today.
History records the perpetual habitation of Babylon since the fall of ancient Babylon. Therefore,
FACT #2-- After the FINAL FALL there will Never Again be any Inhabitants...
... DID NOT HAPPEN 4

This is still to happen in a rebuilt Babylon because the city has never been without some degree of habitation. Remember, the prophecy says it will "never" have people "from generation to generation."
Why I Expect Babylon to be Rebuilt in the Last Days

FACT #3--
After the FINAL FALL there will Never Again be any Arab Dwellers 5
It will never be inhabited or lived in
 from generation to generation;
Nor will the Arab pitch his tent there...
Isaiah 13:20

DID THAT HAPPEN?

Read the historical accounts below of the Arab dwellers at Babylon...

(Graphic below: Koldewey's plotted chart of Arab villages at Babylon)

Below: German archaeologist Koldewey's actual map with overlay of Arab villages, 1900.
History records Arab habitation of Babylon since the rise of Islam in the 7th century. Therefore,
FACT #3-- After the FINAL FALL there will Never Again be any Arab dwellers at Babylon...
...DID NOT HAPPEN 5

This is still to happen in a rebuilt Babylon because Arab villages have been documented at Babylon.

Why I Expect Babylon to be Rebuilt in the Last Days

FACT #4--
After the FINAL FALL Babylon’s Bricks will Never Again be Used
6

"And they will not take from you even a stone for a corner

Nor a stone for foundations,

But you will be desolate forever," declares the LORD.

Jeremiah 51:26

DID THAT HAPPEN?

Check out the accounts below of the RE-use of Babylon's stones since the First Fall of Babylon...

(Graphic below: Babylon Rebuilding project, Babylon, Iraq)

In the above picture we see the current rebuilt wall of Babylon sitting atop the original stones (bricks) of ancient Babylon. Don't be put off by the smallness of this current project.

“Do not despise the Beginning of Small Things”
 Zechariah 4:10

Keep in mind that Jerusalem as we know it today is a huge city that began by building the new city around the walls of "old Jerusalem." Today, the "old city" (Ottoman era walls, with "the deeper the older" sections all the way back to the City of David and beyond) is surrounded by the modern city.
Expect the same thing to happen in Babylon...see graphic below...
Babylon, the city in opposition to God from Genesis 10 to Revelation 18, will undoubtedly, according to the Biblical prophecies, reemerge from ancient to modern, just as Jerusalem, the Holy City to God, finds the "old city" now surrounded by the "new (modern) city."

Babylon's ancient stone bricks have been scavenged out of the ground and reused to testify that the "great city" will be Rebuilt and rise up again.

Look at archaeology-writer Andrew Lawler's words below from his book "Babylon, Gate of the Gods." This is not a book found in Christian bookstores. Yet, follow the yellow lines on the graphic and note that--unknown to the writer--the wording corresponds precisely to Jeremiah's prophecy that "not a cornerstone or a foundation stone" will be taken from Babylon for reuse AFTER ITS FINAL FALL. Has this prophecy been fulfilled yet? No. Literally, "Concrete" evidence that Babylon must rise up again!
BABYLON'S STONES Used Time and Again...
1. “[ Sadam ] also rebuilt Processional Way, a street of ancient stones.”
Qais Hussein Rasheed, acting head of Iraq's Committee of Antiquities and Heritage, BABYLON, Iraq, Feb. 10, 2009 (Reuters)

2. "On the west bank of the Euphrates...are the ruins of this once famous proud city. These ruins are principally the great mound called Babil by the Arabs... The little town of Hillah, near the site of Babylon, is built almost wholly of bricks taken from this single mound."
Easton's Bible Dictionary, Thomas Nelson Publishing, 1897, "Babylon."
NOTE: Hillah today has a population of about half-a-million.
It overlaps part of ancient Babylon and is the
principal city of "Babil (Babel, Babylon) province"
which has a population of about 1 million people.

History records that ancient Babylon's stones have been RE-used for centuries. Therefore,
FACT #4 After the FINAL FALL Babylon’s Bricks will Never Again be Used...
...DID NOT HAPPEN 6

This is still to happen in a rebuilt Babylon because Babylon’s ancient stones have been reused for ages.

Why I Expect Babylon to be Rebuilt in the Last Days

FACT #5--
The FINAL FALL of Babylon will occur in the Day Of The Lord 7

The oracle concerning Babylon… nations gathered together…
the farthest horizons …for the day of the Lord is near…
the sun will be dark… the moon will not give its light …
I will punish the nations… I will make mortal man scarcer than pure gold…

And Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans' pride,
Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.

Isaiah 13

Isaiah chapter 13 gives a prophecy "concerning Babylon" (v.1) in a clear "day of the Lord" context (v.6, 9). All of the judgments and celestial tremors of the Tribulation are depicted (v.10-13). The prophecy is a double-reference prophecy because it has a near-reference to the Medes (v.17) who allied with the Persians to conquer ancient Babylon. But the bulk of the prophecy has a far-reference to the Day of the Lord when Jesus Returns and sets up His Millennial Kingdom (v.14:1-3, 7).

Isaiah 13, then, sets the time of Babylon's ultimate destruction and FINAL FALL at the time of the Second Coming of Christ and the Day of the Lord. This agrees perfectly with Revelation 14:8, 16:19, and the whole of chapter 18.

Notice that this prophecy, like Jeremiah 50-51, attaches Babylon to the geo-ethnic place and people of modern Iraq (Chaldeans, 13:19) the land of the ancient Babylonian nation, and the original city of Babylon.

Revelation chapter 18, which foretells the FINAL FALL of Babylon, fits these other passages like a hand in a glove. We expect this detail and accuracy from God's prophecies,

"I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness
And will not turn back...
Remember the former things long past,
 For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
Declaring the end from the beginning ...
Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
I have planned it, surely I will do it."
Isaiah 45:23; 46:9-11

Babylon's
FINAL FALL is scheduled for THE DAY OF THE LORD 7

The Bible gives strong evidence that Babylon MUST rise up again in a rebuilding program. We don't need headlines to confirm or substantiate God's prophecies. But relatively recent events do just that.

The Question: Can a Mega-City like the Babylon of Revelation 18 be raised up virtually "over night"? Yes it can. Look at Dubai below. Located in the sands of the Arabian peninsula, much like Babylon of Iraq, Dubai sprang up--in historical terms--OVER NIGHT! And the population increased better than 20-fold in less than 40 years.
As the Bible says, in light of what God can do--and has done--in prophecy,

“Do not despise the Beginning of Small Things”

 Zechariah 4:10
Example: 1 Kings 18:44
Many highly regarded Bible scholars, who respect the record of literal fulfillment of the Messianic prophecies of the first coming of Christ, and the literal fulfillment of scores of prophecies foretelling the restoration of the nation Israel in the Last Days, also, consistent with their literal understanding of Bible prophecy, expect that Babylon-city in Iraq will be literally rebuilt and raised up for a short time as the metropolis of the world in the Last Days.
Joseph A. Seiss (in 1900 predicted the Rebirth of Israel, & predicted a Rebuilt Babylon)
" I conclude, then, that such a great commercial city, different from all that now exist, will yet be, and that it will be old Babylon rebuilt.”
Joseph A. Seiss, The Apocalypse, Kregel Publications, Grand Rapids, MI, 1900, 1983, p.403. 8

If you are not sure of your relationship with God in Jesus Christ, God the Son who died for our sins and rose from the dead to prove that He is "the resurrection and the life," then read in the same Book Of Revelation that predicts the rise of Babylon these words that frame the Book and God's desire for your life...
...at the front end, Revelation 1:5,
and at the back end, Revelation 22:17...

"Jesus Christ...the ruler of the kings of the earth.
To Him who loves us, and released us from our sins by His blood..."

"... let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost."

All you have to do is believe in Jesus Christ the Son of God for this promise and He will do it, right now, today, at this moment, and your Eternal Never-Ending Life Will Begin !
PRAISE HIS NAME

2. Why America is NOT Babylon
1. America is not the Mother of Harlots ("Harlots" preceded America; Isa. 1:21; 23:17; Eze. 23:17; Hos. 9:1; Nah. 2:4)
"previous commentaries on Revelation take...this great city, Babylon...to be Rome, or New York, or some other city, but not Babylon. What is the explanation for this reluctance to believe that John meant Babylon when he wrote 'Babylon'?"...to say that spiritual Babylon is either Rome or the Roman Catholic Church is to grossly underestimate the age long global impact of this great mystery, Babylon the Great. Babylon is the mother of all the harlots and abominations of the earth."
Henry Morris, The Revelation Record, Tyndale House Publishers, Wheaton, IL, 1983, p.323, 332.
2. America is not “the great city” (America is neither a "city," nor responsible for the death of Christians, Rev. 18:21 & 24)
3. America is not located on the Euphrates (Jer. 51:63)
4. America is not the “land of the Chaldeans” (Jer. 50:1)
5. Americans are not “Chaldeans” (Jer. 50:35)
The Babylon mentioned in 1Pe 5:13 was not Rome, as some have thought, but the literal city of Babylon, which was inhabited by many Jews at the time Peter wrote.
Easton's Bible Dictionary, Thomas Nelson Publishing, 1897, "Babylon."

3. FACT #1-- The FINAL FALL will be Suddenly & Violently.
Cyrus marched his troops into Babylon...absorb[ing] the Chaldean empire with little struggle.
World History To 1648, Harper-Collins College Outline Series, p.41

"Babylon, indeed, will be permanently destroyed...but this has not happened yet...This, however, will require that Babylon somehow be restored to its former magnificence and prominence...[Babylon] has never actually died, even in a physical sense, and the great prophecies of her utter desolation in Isaiah and Jeremiah have never yet been really fulfilled. But they will be!"
Henry Morris, The Revelation Record, Tyndale House Publishers, Wheaton, IL, 1983, p.332, 340.

4. FACT #2-- After the FINAL FALL there will never again be any inhabitants.
Major excavations were conducted by the German architect R. Koldewey (1855–1925) from 1899 to 1917. These excavations revealed data for all levels of occupation from Old Babylonian (1894–1595 B.C.E.) to Parthian times (250 B.C.E.–224 C.E.)

“Babylon continued to be inhabited in some form or other as late as AD 1000.”
John F. Walvoord, The Nations In Prophecy, Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids, MI, 1967, p.58. (Walvoord believes a rebuilt Babylon is a possibility)

“I can find no time in history when it can be said conclusively that Babylon ceased to exist. Her population has risen and fallen through the ages, but there has never been a time when the city has been completely abandoned... Babylon’s fortunes have declined, but the city has never been destroyed.”
Charles Dyer, The Rise of Babylon. Wheaton, Illinois: Tyndale House, 1991, p.130-131.

5. FACT #3-- After the FINAL FALL there will never again be Arab dwellers.

[Koldewey] made a map of the site, showing that it was inhabited by local Arabs, some of whom had erected villages (for which the German word is DORF), made of ancient Babylon's baked bricks, made by Nebuchdrezzar. He also lived on the site for several years, supervising the excavations (ca. 1900-1912).

During the Sassanid period, A.D. 226-636, people were still living on the debris of the ancient palaces. By the Arabic Middle Ages nothing but huts were left at Babylon, a condition that continued until the twelfth century of our era."

7. FACT #5-- The FINAL FALL will occur in the Day of the Lord.

Isaiah 13:17 is more likely a reference to the "spirit of the Medes" rather than the Medes themselves, per Jer. 51:11 which is set in the same context. Either way, whether a double-reference prophecy, or the "spirit of the Medes", Babylon's FINAL FALL will occur in the Day of the Lord at the End of the Great Tribulation.

But we believe that the great majority of our readers — who have no traditions to uphold — will be satisfied that the Babylon of the Apocalypse is the Babylon of Old Testament prophecy, namely, a literal, re-built city in “the land of Nimrod” (Micah 5:6, [ i.e. ASSYRIA] )..."

"Even at the time John was writing [Revelation, 95 AD], Babylon was still a viable city...At the very least, it would be confusing to John's first century readers, as well as to later generations, for him to write so much about Babylon when he really meant Rome (Paul was not afraid to speak directly about Rome in his writings, so why should John be?)... Whatever may prove to be the exact sequence of events, Babylon will surely be rebuilt."

"Babylon was never destroyed—it only declined…[it] always had at least some inhabitants.
